Donald Trump attracted media attention when he renovated his family's venture, Commodore Hotel, adjacent to Grand Central Terminal in 1978. He renewed the Grand Hyatt New York between 1978 and 1980 by using a glass envelope.

The businessman Trump bought the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach Florida and converted it into a private club. The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan became his property in 1988 but he sold it for bankruptcy protection.
